The Luma Institute put together a useful design research methodology framework to help design researchers choose the appropriate tools for the varying stages of the innovation process with focus on your end-user requirements (featured in Harvard Business Review).

There are 36 innovation tools organised around three categories: looking, understanding and making and the tool is designed to construct your research pathway explaining how each tool is used and relevant to your project. An all round useful design research tool.
